Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars

Warren Winiarski founded Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars in 1970 when he purchased the Stag’s Leap Vineyard in Napa’s Stags Leap District. The 1973 S.L.V. Cabernet Sauvignon – only the second vintage – won the famous 1976 Judgement of Paris blind tasting, rocketing the estate to fame.

Born in Chicago, Winiarski was inspired by a trip to Italy to start making wine at home. He worked as an apprentice at Souverain, before becoming the first winemaker at Robert Mondavi in 1966. In 1968, Winiarski left to make wine at Ivancie Cellars in Colorado. He returned to Napa in 1970 and, with investor support, managed to buy a piece of land, right next door to Nathan Fay’s vineyard – having tasted Fay’s wines and been impressed.
