Ao Yun – translating literally as “flying above the clouds” – is China’s most famous wine estate. Owned by Moët Hennessy, the aim was to produce a world-class fine wine that was the first Himalayan “grand cru”. The first vintage was 2013, released in 2016.

The company first started looking for the perfect site in 2008, and after four years settled on the Yunnan province, on the banks of the Mekong River. The location – close to Shangri-La – is so remote that they had to build their own road to give access to the vineyards, with no electricity and slopes so steep that they couldn’t be mechanised.
