The Macallan Rare Cask expressions have been created to deliver what this revered brand is synonymous with: sherry oak matured single malt. This batch, like others before it, is defined by a natural rich mahogany colour imparted from a combination of American and European sherry seasoned oak casks - a high proportion of which, significantly, are first fill. The result, according to Nick Savage, Master Distiller for The Macallan, is “one of The Macallan’s most complex yet balanced whiskies that we’ve created, with soft notes of rich oak, vanilla and chocolate”. First introduced in 2014, it wasn’t until 2018 that each release was differentiated by the year it was launched, followed by a batch number. We have come to expect up to three batches per year comprising of a vatting of 50 sherry oak butts. This has added a serious collectability factor, with The Macallan enthusiasts enjoying the search for subtle variances in taste from batch to batch.
