The 2014 Brut Rosé Belle Époque is a blend of half Pinot Noir from Mailly, Ambonnay and Aÿ, 45% Chardonnay from Cramant and Avize and 5% Pinot Meunier from Dizy. Its pink hue results from 11% red Pinot Noir and shimmers with coppery glints. Tender notes of maple syrup accompany incipient truffle on a nose that combines chalk and dried redcurrant. The palate is fresher than the nose suggests, offering a beautiful capsule of tart red fruit, dried orange peel and chalk, all fizzing gently with the finest, creamiest mousse. This is a mature and evolving pink Champagne with supreme and exquisite freshness that rings long, featuring attractive nuttiness on the finish. It's lovely now but has even more life left. Dosage is 9 grams per liter.

Full bottle 1,597 g. Super-pale pink – it looks more like a white wine. Very biscuity and a little whisper of smoke on the finish. Clearly a wine that has done some serious time on lees – dense, rich shortbread, creamy sweetness but the fruit is massively understated. The wine as a whole is a master of understatement. Although, as if to make up for it, the bubbles are big and generous! (TC)
