Score 94/100 · Drink 2019-2036, William Kelley, Wine Advocate, Aug 2022

Roederer's 1996 Brut Vintage is especially compelling today, wafting from the glass with scents of crisp orchard fruit, dried white flowers, clear honey, citrus oil, buttery pastry, freshly baked bread and iodine. Full-bodied, ample and concentrated, with a deep core of ripe fruit, racy acids and impressive chalky structure, it concludes with a long, saline finish. This is one wine from this heralded vintage that lives up to all the year's early acclaim.

Complex nose hints at apple, clove, earth, curry powder, oyster shell and creamed corn. Full, strong and quite dry, with a subtle leesy aspect and hints of toast and hazelnut. This really expands in flavor toward the back, showing more density and concentration, and really sticking to the palate, on the finish. Still an infant, and capable of a decade or more of development in bottle.
