Smoky dark fruit. Lovely inviting nose – dark spiced fruit and slightly floral, also herbal and peppery. Silky soft tannins, finely fresh, delicious. Aromatic and fine. Seems much younger than 2001 – especially compared with the Châteauneuf. Lingering freshness even though the alcohol is 13.5%. (JH)

Pretty heady and wild – seems more obviously alcoholic than the 2003 unusually. Lots of life, made by one of the Midi’s most admired wine producers described here from yields as low as 15 hl/ha. Definitely worth waiting for. (JR)
