(the last disgorgement of the '06, done in November of 2012; 100% pinot noir, purchased from the same farmer in Oltrepo Pavese since 1983): Pale, bright straw. Toast and a hint of redcurrant on the nose. Good musky complexity to the slightly bitter, toasty flavors of peach and stone. Finishes frothy and dry, with good breadth. Bruna Giacosa told me that annual production of this wine was in the range of 7,000 to 10,000 bottles but that it was once as high as 25,000.

(disgorged in March of 2011, less than five grams per liter of residual sugar): Pale bright yellow. Pretty floral nose with a leesy complexity. Lemony and young but showing a creamy leesy quality to go with suggestions of ripe stone fruits. Sound, harmonious acidity extends the dusty finish of this youthful, cool wine.

Bruno Giacosa – now run by daughter Bruna – is a cult Nebbiolo producer, that has consistently made some of the best single-vineyard Barbaresco and Barolo from the 1960s onwards. The“red-label” Riservas are some of the finest and most collectable wines in Italy.
