Deep and slightly dull coloured. Rather shrill and vinegary on the nose, with a heightened violetty aroma. Thick and tannic, with some mineral poise and focus on the palate, but overall tending towards hefty. (AH)

Some furniture polish on the nose, then the rich winter smell of roasted chestnuts and warm raspberry. Brambly red fruit, tart-yet-sweet, with earthy dusty notes of clove and anise and nutmeg. Swaddled in muscled tannins that build on the finish and grapple with the fruit for dominance. The fruit hangs in, along with quite an exotic perfume, almost like incense and lavender. I’ve always found the Helichrysum to be the more powerful wine, but this vintage the high-impact wine seems to be the straight Brunello. Complex and demanding – even truculent right now. Decant for quite a while before drinking. (TC)
