Medium red. Red berries and a hint of flowers on the nose. Silky, rich and seamless, showing good volume and fat to its strawberry fruit. Nicely saturates the palate on the persistent back end, with the tannins noticeably sweet for the vintage.

Lightish cherry red. A little darker in fruit than the Gevrey Corbeaux but still scented with red cherry. Deliciously fruited and scented on the palate too. Light, fresh, in balance. (JH)

Healthy dark red. Explosive aromas of raspberry, licorice and flowers. Powerfully built yet light on its feet, showing outstanding concentration to its flavors of black cherry, licorice, flowers and minerals. This is more Musigny than Chambolle in style. Finishes extremely long and saline; one can taste the compact chalk here. An outstanding, wonderfully energetic premier cru of considerable class.

The 2014 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Combe d'Orveaux was just a little reduced on the nose when we met at the domaine. Like the Noirots, this is holding something back. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit; there is mouth-sapping salinity here and it is delineated with good tension, gently building towards a lightly grippy finish. Once the aromatics awaken, this will be a lovely Chambolle Musigny, even if it is a bit of a broody bugger out of barrel.
