Drink 2016-2021+, FINE+RARE, Jul 2016

We’ve been following Chateau de Jacques for a number of years as it offers simply outstanding value from this forgotten corner of Burgundy. These are serious wines; deep rich and complex. No carbonic maceration – grapes are handpicked, fermented and matured in oak as you would find in the Cotes des Nuits. The results are stunning and put paid to any reputation which rather unfairly befalls Beaujolais. All of the range of single-vineyards were great in 2015, but this ‘La Rochelle’ just leapt out during our office tasting. At GBP 212 per dozen bottles, the value here is exceptional and shows just how epic the combination of the 2015 vintage and winemaking muscle of Louis Jadot in this vintage. Deep and dark in the glass with a beautiful, intense nose with layers of rich berry fruit, cherry and raspberry. Dark chocolate, coffee, vibrant acidity and an energetic, long finish.

Tank sample. Something a bit odd on the nose. Marrons glacés flavours and then very drying – and alcoholic – on the end. (JR)
