The 1984 Rivesaltes from Riveyrac (the local co-operative in Salses) has a more youthful, burnished red color compared to the 1988. It has a complex nose of decayed red fruit, burning embers, cigar box and the inside of a medicine cabinet long overdue a clean-out. The palate is well balanced with a taut entry, not as much depth as the 1988 and certainly with a drier, spirituous finish. Not bad, but I prefer the younger vintage.

Over 50% Grenache Noir plus other Grenaches. Reddish tawny colour. Smells very round, like tawny port. Very smooth and polished with a little butterscotch and lots of freshness and a tiny bit of alcohol on the end. Rather elegant and very refreshing. Lightly rancio and reminds me of a fine colheita.
