Roberto Voerzio’s Barolo Capalot is stunning. This case contains one magnum each of the 2009, 2010 and 2011 vintages – the last three produced before Voerzio lost the lease on the vineyard. Voerzio is one of the most acclaimed wine producers in Piedmont, making wines that express exactly what is great about Barolo. The estate was formed in the 1980s when Roberto inherited five hectares of his father's vineyards. Barolo Capalot is a blend sourced from a small plot of old vines in the Capalot vineyard which is superbly situated. The soils here have a high proportion of rock which gives a distinct minerality, freshness and complex aromatics to the wine. Sadly, Roberto lost his lease to the vineyard so the 2011 marks the last vintage made from this site. The 2009 was rated 96+ points by the Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner, writing, “This is a full and generous wine with enormous clarity and power.” The 2010 hasn’t been rated but Antonio Galloni rates the 2011 93-95+ points, saying: “A deep, dense, explosive wine, the Capalot is built on resonance and volume.”
