The entry level cuvee from this terrific estate is the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape, and it checks in as a mix of 75% Grenache, 12% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre, with the balance other permitted varieties. I should have bought a case of this as it’s as classic Southern Rhône as they come and offers ripe, full-throttle notes of cured meats, black raspberries, incense and spice. Full-bodied, complex and loaded with character, it has impeccable tannin quality and will keep for another decade.

Opaque ruby. Pungent blackberry and cherry aromas are complemented by anise and smoky herbs. Lush, open-knit dark fruit flavors are lifted by zesty minerality and framed by supple tannins. The tannins turn firmer with air and add grip to the long, spicy, focused finish. Showing a more serious side than it did from barrel.
A traditional, structured wine, the 2007 Bosquet des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape offers up complex aromatics of dark, mineral laced fruit, garrigue, herbs and crushed stone. The palate shows nice density to go with a clean, precise and structured character. This improved in the glass and is an excellent wine to drink over the coming 10 to 12 years.
Very meaty nose yet lovely and luscious on the palate. What's not to like? (JR)
