The 1964 Monfortino is a fine conclusion to this dinner. Dried flowers, mint, sweet tobacco, cedar and incense open in the glass. Like the 1964, the 1967 is so aromatic and nuanced. It’s a great example of how wines from this era can age. The 1964 is ethereal but not light, a wine with gorgeous, understated nuance and tons of class. It’s a fine substitute for the 1958. Our bottles were good, but not as great as they should have been, which of course can happen with bottles of this age. The 1964 did a fine job filling in.

The 1964 Barolo Riserva Monfortino was uncharacteristically sweet, with open, expressive aromatics and gorgeous purity to its fruit.
The 1964 Barolo Monfortino, which I decanted in Maryland before making the trek to Brooklyn, probably suffered from being drunk six hours after it had been opened and decanted. The wine reveals generous amounts of amber to the color, a lusty, seaweed, dried herb, spicy nose, but fading, fragile flavors.
