FINE+RARE, Apr 2022

Ch. Margaux is great in 2021 – a wine that holds on to the property’s typicity while also being different in style to previous vintages. It shows the effect of the vintage so clearly, while never losing its precision. The nose is gorgeous with lightly scented peony, old rose and milk chocolate aromas. On the palate the wine has fantastic tannic flex – supple, layered almost elasticated tannins that bring effortless structure. While Margaux always veers towards a red fruit profile, this is more evident in 2021 than other vintages, with raspberry, cranberry and sour cherry fruit bringing real bite and freshness to the wine. The high-quality fruit sustains a long finish. Blend: 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot

Tasted blind. Dark and concentrated. A little sweaty on the end. Very sweet and unlike the vintage norm. Powerful and almost like a late-20th-century wine! Dry, slightly sudden, inky finish. (JR)

In the running for the wine of the vintage, the 2021 Château Margaux is stunning in its concentration, depth, purity, and length. Pure cassis and black raspberry fruits as well as graphite, ripe tobacco, and spicy oak all define the aromatics, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, ultra-fine, building tannins, and a gorgeous finish. The style actually reminds me slightly of the 1996, and while it offers pleasure even today, it deserves 5-7 years of bottle age and will evolve for 20-30 years gracefully. It's a classic Château Margaux. The blend is 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, aged all in new French oak.
