The 2020 Wolfer Goldgrube Riesling Spätlese is very clear, deep, refined but heavily reductive on the nose that shows ripe and well-defined, very precise and elegant fruit intertwined with crushed slate aromas. Piquant and stimulatingly salty on the palate, this is a sensationally salivating Spätlese with a round and elegant fruit texture and very delicate, crystalline and gorgeous acidity. This is a mind-blowing Spätlese, of which collectors will need at least a dozen cases. Nobody among us will see this wine beyond its peak. 8.5% stated alcohol and 72 grams of residual sugar. Tasted in October 2021.

On the nose of the Goldgrube Spätlese, Vollenweider unleashes the full aromatic power of spontaneous fermentation with freshly crushed green herbs, even a hint of herbal honey and a scent one could describe as funkily flinty. On the palate exotic fruit meets local orchard, honeyed lemon takes care of zest and acidity, herbal and mineral nuances add a sophisticated piquancy to the finish. (MS)
