From vines planted in 1867. Some fungal and farmyard aromas on the nose, with overripe black fruit and sweet spice. Lovely snappy blackcurrant on the palate. The acid seems rather sharp, clashing with the confected element. (RH)

Solid rains in winter and spring meant vines had constant access to water and the warmer weather in the New Year meant all of the fruit was in near-perfect condition and ripeness when it was harvested. Picked just before the heatwave of mid February. One of the best vintages in recent memory. pH 3.42, TA 6.36 g/l. Bright crimson. Bright sweet fruit – almost like old-vine Grenache on the nose! Very sweet and vibrant – not remotely like most Oz Shiraz. Something medicinal with round tannins and great purity and freshness. Tobacco leafiness, really bright fruit. Light tannins on the end. Long. Still tight but very accomplished. Subtle and layered. Very long. (JR)
