Kiwi, white peach, quince and pineapple inform an effusive nose and dominate a plush, luscious, expansive, glossy midpalate, to which white pepper, hints of quinine bitterness and nutty piquancy lend welcome, invigorating counterpoint. The enveloping finish takes on a honeyed sense of richness and comes off as faintly sweet, although analysis reveals only four grams of residual sugar. But for all of that richness, this bottling’s peppery and piquant elements ensure that its overall effect remains stimulating as well as soothing.

The 2015 Riesling Smaragd Wachstum Bodenstein is from the Seiberberg (420 to 460 meters) that was planted in 1990 with a high variability of Riesling plants. Picked very late (late October), this Riesling displays great purity and coolish aromatics, but is incredibly intense and powerful in 2015, almost fat in its sheer concentration. Great finish, round and balanced.
