Score 91+/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Mar 2011

Deep red. High-pitched aromas of blackberry, elderberry, licorice and menthol, plus a whiff of peppermint; blacker in fruit quality than the Combe d'Orveaux. Sweet, ripe, intense and classy, with palate-saturating dark fruits and excellent lift. The wine's very ripe, broad tannins seem more like suave Vosne than sturdy Nuits. But give this four or five years in the cellar. Incidentally, Clavelier describes his 2009s as "jovial." In comparison, he says, the 2008s are more vertical wines, "quite dry and classic but closed now, and probably for drinking later than the 2009s."

Deep red with ruby highlights. A basket of dark berries on the nose-boysenberry, cassis and blackberry-lifted by violet and mint. High-pitched and quite tightly wound and penetrating in the mouth, with intense, sharply delineated flavors of black fruits, violet and lavender. This turned tougher with air as the tannins mounted and will clearly require serious cellar time. But there's also nobility and a degree of elegance here.
