Score 92/100 · Drink 2024-2034, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Jan 2024

The 2019 Barolo Colonnello from Aldo Conterno is a dark, somber wine. Black cherry, plum, mocha, spice, leather, gravel and a kiss of French oak add to an impression of gravitas. The 2019 possesses a deep core of fruit and the structure to match. Today, it is a bit imposing. A few years in bottle should do the trick.

From an east-facing site and aged for 30 months in botte. Very bright garnet. The rich chestnut nose dissipated unexpectedly fast. Very concentrated and grippy on the palate. Hint of almonds on the end. Really youthful! Pinched finish but the overall impression is fresh enough. Transparent, appetising and promising but not nearly ready. (JR)

Monforte d’Alba. Edgy, complex nose that’s currently extremely stern and uncompromising on the finish, which is decidedly bitter at this stage. Put this away for quite a while! (JR)

Freshly cut flowers with strawberry, peach and orange peel aromas that follow through to a full body with layers of velvety tannins, that have a fine texture and give a refined yet voluptuous mouthfeel. It shows class and harmony for this tannic vintage. Drink after 2027.
