The 2020 Volnay Champans 1er Cru comes across as a little jammy on the nose with hints of cassis and black cherries, clarifying with aeration in the glass but still missing some complexity. The 2020 is ripe and opulent. A sweet core of cassis fruit mixes with marmalade and fig. Clean on the honeyed-textured finish, enjoyable, but again, the warmth of that summer denudes this of Burgundy DNA. It's a little monolithic and certainly well below its showing from barrel. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Champans reveals aromas of cherries, sweet berries, dark chocolate, rich spices and loamy soil, followed by a medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated palate framed by powdery tannins and lively acids, concluding with a sapid finish. As with the Clos des Chênes, this represents a particular success in 2020.

Cask sample. Deep ruby; big mouthful of ripe fruit, closing down immediately. Structure and depth. Long life ahead. (MH)
