The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Grands Ruchottes 1er Cru has a delicate bouquet that unfurls: white peach, pear and just a hint of beeswax emerging with time. The palate is well balanced with a slight tanginess on the entry. Quite linear, nice salinity if just missing the persistence of the best wines in its class due to a finish that is slightly too sweet. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Grands Ruchottes 1er Cru has the best aromatics of Moreau's Premier Crus - more terroir expression and mineralité percolating through the citrus fruit. The palate is well balanced with a lightly spiced opening; this cuvée balances the acidic "bite" with a sense of richness with real aplomb. Very persistent on the finish, the 2021 comes highly recommended.

There's only one barrel of the 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Grandes Ruchottes, derived from the old-vine holdings (plus a few rows of young vines) formerly exploited by Domaine Bernard Moreau, but its quality is some compensation for the tiny quantity. Offering up aromas of pear, citrus oil, nutmeg, white flowers and paraffin wax, it's medium to full-bodied, seamless and complete, with terrific concentration, racy acids and a long, saline finish. As has often been the case in its previous incarnation, it will embarrass many a grand cru in this challenging vintage.
