Another charming wine from the Moulis region of the Médoc (which is the MO of the terroir), the 2016 Château Maucaillou has light red fruits (raspberries, strawberries) and floral notes to go with a medium-bodied, light, elegant, deliciously gulpable feel on the palate. It’s nicely balanced and shines for its drinkability.
The 2016 Maucaillou feels a little smudged on the nose, missing some joie-de-vivre and detail. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly lactic opening, a smooth texture and a dense, slightly labored finish. This underperforms vis-à-vis its showing from barrel.
Very floral and citrusy with raspberry and cherry aromas. Medium body, lively acidity and a fresh and zingy finish. Energetic. A blend of 52 per cent cabernet sauvignon, 41 per cent merlot and seven per cent petit verdot. Try after 2020.

Owned by the négociant Dourthe, this Moulis property has 87 hectares of vines today (with 67 added by Philippe Dourthe since 1967). Managed and made by an expert team, the quality here is hardly surprising.
