This is admittedly a weaker vintage, but the 2014 Montevetrano sails forth with its characteristic confidence and determination nevertheless. The wine is composed of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Aglianico and 20% Merlot, and the aging process takes the finished wine through 14 months in French oak. Some 25,000 bottles were produced. This is a complete and generous wine with dark fruit nuances followed by spice, tar and campfire ash. Like the Aglianico Core, this wine shows a unique point of exotic or Indian spice.

This is really voluptuous with dried-berry, light jam, menthol and spice character. Full to medium body, velvety tannins and a juicy and fruity finish. Spearmint at the end. A beauty now but will improve nicely with bottle age.

The 2014 Montevetrano is a more forward and linear rendition, yet still pleasurable. Minty herbs, raspberry and molten chocolate form its bouquet. The palate is round, nearly fleshy yet not quite, with a core of tart red berry fruits and a cascade of autumnal spice. Sweet tannin mingles with a hint of blood orange and clove through the long yet gently structured finale. The 2014 is in a lovely place and ready to enjoy, with several years of balanced drinking ahead.
