Earning a maximum score from every single taster who encountered it in The Society’s 2021 Wine Champions tastings (no mean feat given the extremely high quality of last year’s bordeaux line-up), this is a wine from Jean-Baptiste Cordonnier. He described his 2015 as having the tannins of 2009 and the balance of 2010 (his best vintage ever). The Society has worked with this property next to Chasse-Spleen since 1978! Very consistent 30-year-old vines. HVE level 3 accredited from 2018. 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc. Harvest: 18 September to 3 October. 17- to 25-day fermentation followed by 12 months’ ageing in oak barrels, one-third new, one-third second use, one-third third use. Bottled 28 July 2017. RS <2 g/l, TA 3.38 g/l, pH 3.54, SO 2 total 68 mg/l, SO 2 free 11 mg/l Very slightly sweaty on the nose with some metallic note on the end. Still quite chewy. (JR)

On the plateau of Moulis. Not offered on the Place de Bordeaux but bought through a 'small agent in France'. 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc. Harvest 18 September to 13 October. Maceration/malolactic fermentation 17–25 days. All aged in French oak for 12–14 months. Bottled June 2017. Closure: natural cork. TA 3.46 g/l, pH 3.57, RS 0 g/l, SO 2 total 84 ppm, SO 2 free 18 ppm. The Wine Society have been buying wine from this property for 40 years! Very deep purplish crimson still. Lovely fresh lift on the nose. Bone-dry finish but a luscious start and just what you want from a modern Médoc. Silly price. The interesting thing here is the drinking window: I'd say it has only just started and may not go on for as long as wines from some more illustrious properties but this is a great bet for the elderly! Picked from 18 September to 3 October. 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc. Deep dark crimson. Some real ripeness and so much fruit that it distracts most successfully from the very substantial, almost inky tannins underneath. Velvety texture. Savoury. (JR)
