The 2011 Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru is clean and precise on the nose, very detailed and pure with ebullient red cherry and wild strawberry laced with cold stone and pressed flower scents. The palate is well balanced with succulent ripe tannin, good depth and well-integrated oak. This is a classy, sophisticated offering from the Bichot team with real precision and detail on the finish. Afford this Grand Cru another five or six years to get the most from it. Excellent. Tasted at Flint Wines Burgundy 2011 tasting.

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. I like this nose on the Grands Echézeaux 2011 from Bichot. It is open and unpretentious, detailed and focused with crisp raspberry and crushed strawberry scents, stony underneath with touches of sous-bois. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp and taut tannins. It does not quite deliver the promise of the nose, though there is a pleasant fleshiness and vitality here. Tightly coiled at the moment, give this two or three years in the cellar.

Very slightly smoky, and peppery. Savoury and juicy on the palate. Firm, dense but lively too. A touch of char undermines it a little for me. (JH)
