The 2021 Barbaresco Montefico Vigna Bric Mentina is redolent of dried herbs, mint, spice, pipe tobacco and cedar. Exotic and beguiling, especially in its bouquet, the 2021 is just starting to open. I would prefer to cellar it for a few years, though. Readers will find a mid-weight, nuanced Barbaresco loaded with complexity and dynamic energy. The sculpted, youthfully austere style is classic Montefico.

Barbaresco. Lustrous mid ruby. Rich red-fruit nose with notes of mace and black pepper. Supple, succulent red fruit with clayey tannins. Aromatic build-up and then closes up on the finish. Lots of supple acidity, but needs a little more time. (WS)
The 2021 Barbaresco Montefico Vigna Bric Mentina is a classic. Crushed flowers, salt, white pepper, rose petal and lavender race across the palate. Just bottled, the 2021 is quite nervous, but it conveys striking energy and translucent finesse. The aromatics alone are beguiling. All this needs is time. In other words, it is classic Montefico.
