Very rainy winter, with some snowfalls. Temperatures sometimes low and freezing, sometimes above the average. First part of springtime quite rainy with low temperatures, slightly lower than average. The vegetation phase started a little late; flowering at the end of May. Relatively low summer temperatures delayed ripeness. Early September was characterised by persistent summer sun and above-average temperatures, especially during the day. Rain in early October slowed ripening and caused dilution. Mid garnet. Pale rim. Autumnal leaf mulch on the nose. Still a work in (rather intriguing) progress. Tannins provide quite a framework but this is promising for the long term. Still pretty chewy. I’d recommend cellaring this burly wine for quite a while. Still some drying tannins on the finish. Liquorice notes. Quite demanding – quite a contrast to the sweet charm of 2012. (JR)

Tenute Silvio Nardi's 2013 Brunello di Montalcino is a balanced and complete wine. It opens to pretty color saturation and a mid-weight style that is perhaps a touch darker and more concentrated compared to some of the estate's neighbors in this beautiful appellation. Dark fruit flavors of dark cherry and plum segue to spice, campfire ash, cola and wild rose. The wine sees a long oak-aging period, with 12 months in smaller tonneaux followed by 18 months in botti grandi. This elaborate process bodes well for the future longevity of the wine. In fact, I would definitely recommend putting this bottle aside for a few more years before popping the cork.

Mid to deep ruby. Lifted, sweet, perfumed cherry-liqueur nose with a touch of oak and fruit cake. Perfumed and sweet cherry fruit and grainy tannins. Quite ripe and generous yet well balanced too. (WS) (JR)
