Tasting notes
FINE+RARE, May 2025

The 1990 Volnay Santenots from Robert Ampeau is a firmly savoury, mature but still powerful wine. The nose combines mushroom and undergrowth with richer, macerated cherries, and a touch of balsamic. There’s power and weight to the palate – a breadth of structure with a grip of tannins that frame the fruit. A hit of spice complements the cherry richness and iron edge to the mid-palate, with a long, smoky, saline finish. An impressive wine that’s holding up beautifully.

Domaine Robert Ampeau

The epitome of old-school Burgundy, the Meursault-based Domaine Robert Ampeau crafts traditional wines, both red and white. Today run by Michel Ampeau, the property’s wines are – unlike most producers today – only released when they are ready to drink, often with 20-plus years in bottle.
