Bright medium ruby. Cool, fresh scents of blueberry, blackberry and mint lifted by a violet topnote. A juicy, penetrating midweight with lovely inner-mouth floral/minty lift to its dark berry flavors. No easy sweetness or fleshiness here but not hard either. In fact, this wine delivers a lovely combination of density and suavity. Finishes savory, firmly tannic and long, with no rough edges. This still has the energy to gain in depth with further bottling aging. (ST)

I retasted the 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon Martha’s Vineyard (rated 88? in issue #157), and it is a hard style of wine that will unquestionably last 15-20 years, but falls short of my expectations in terms of concentration, complexity, and depth. The attractive bouquet offers sweet cassis, flower, and earth aromas. In the mouth, it reveals subtle oak, medium body, and an elegant personality with little depth or length beyond its charming, superficial appeal. This is a legendary cuvee, but we haven’t seen a great Martha’s Vineyard Cabernet in nearly twenty years. A 2004 Chardonnay was also tasted, but found to be simple and uninteresting. Tel.
