Quite open sort of sucky throat-lozenge nose. Easy and open and soft. Correct but not so exciting. Just a little rhubarby – not the most precise fruit. 40-year-old vines. (JR)

Alain Coudert – for more about whom and about whose Clos de la Roilette, please consult my report in issue 184 – has bottled a 2009 Fleurie of intriguing, marrow-like meatiness and ripe blackberry and mulberry fruit. Smoky notes of black tea, burley tobacco, and peat; and a suffusion of marine salinity, resin, and walnut oil add to the interest of a long, satisfying finish to a wine sure to be worth following for at least the next 2-3 years. Imported by Louis/Dressner Selections, New York, NY; tel. (212) 334 8191
