The 2011 Melbury is precise, aromatic and finely cut, with stunning balance and tons of class. The 2011 is such an elegant wine. This clay-rich vineyard seems to drain quite well. The 2011 is in an absolutely great shape today. Bright red-toned fruit, blood orange, mint and white pepper linger.

In this tasting, the 2011 Melbury doesn’t show the volume or structure of some of the more important vintages, but it has plenty of acidity to drink well for many years. Given the challenges of the vintage, the flavor profile is naturally a bit more savory than is the norm, while the palate-feel is a touch narrow. Even so, it is pretty clear the 2011 will have its day at some point in the future. Today, it is best cellared for at least another few years.

Bright ruby-red. Aromas of boysenberry, currant, pepper, licorice and nutty oak, plus a cool hint of shoe polish. Fine-grained but quite dry and backward, with its dark plum, mint and licorice flavors showing a slightly herbal quality. This is tough going today and in need of substantial aging to soften and expand. Not hugely ripe or complex but the wine's juiciness and mineral support suggest that it will age gracefully. Right now it's a bit tart on the back end.

Very dark purplish crimson. Lots of both sweetness and energy on the nose. Round and luscious without being at all sickly or hot. Very well balanced. Bitter cherries. Lively. (JR)
