Abreu's 2019 Cappella Proprietary Red isn't a standout the way it was in 2018, but it remains a marvelous wine, bursting with cassis and plum and layered with oak-derived spice and vanilla shadings. It's full-bodied and concentrated, rich and velvety, perhaps just a bit warm on the lingering finish.

Coming from a site just outside of St. Helena, the 2019 Cappella is a deep, powerful, yet incredibly elegant Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated release offering lots of red and black fruits, full-bodied richness, incredibly complex notes of leafy herbs, spring flowers, green tobacco, and camphor, ultra-fine tannins, and a great, great finish. Few wines marry this level of richness with such a sense of elegance and purity. As with most 2019s, it already offers pleasure, yet do your best to give bottles 3-5 years. It will have 20-25 years of overall longevity.

The 2019 Cappella is brooding in demeanor, almost uncharacteristically so. Dark and potent, with huge tannins, the 2019 is a behemoth. Licorice, gravel, crushed rocks, lavender and spice play off a core of inky blue/purplish fruit. This is a tremendous showing from a wine that usually gives the impression of being pretty approachable young.

The 2019 Cappella is positively stunning. It is full of all the Cappella signatures, with an extra kick of vibrancy and tension that is just so alluring. Bright red cherry fruit, blood orange, mint and cinnamon lend striking brilliance. Cappella has been on a massive upswing in recent years as the vines have gotten older. This is an especially fine edition.
