The 1994 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is a tricky vintage. One bottle tasted back in 2009 was rather green and another that popped up in a private dinner performed similarly. Vestiges of red fruit on the nose but rather mean, the palate is pleasant enough but missing a real core of fruit and tapering sharply towards the dry finish. Drink any bottle you may, or may not own. Tasted at a private dinner in Beaune.

Chaptalised from 12 to 13%. Rain. Elastic and versatile even if not desperately concentrated. Twangs back to base on the finish but pretty damned good for the vintage. Just a bit tough and dry on the end. They left this wine on the lees for ages to try to combat dilution. (JR)
