The 1997 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta di Castelgiocondo is a focused and determined wine that is laced with black cherry, sweet spice, candied fruit, menthol notes, root beer and licorice. The brightness and overall buoyant lift to the bouquet is very attractive. Brunello Castelgiocondo changes gear in the mouth where instead of brawn and power, it delivers a compact and smooth finish. The wine is at its peak drinking moment now, or perhaps slightly beyond it. Drink: 2014-2019.

Orange peels, dark fruits, with hints of fresh mushrooms and berries on the nose. Full-bodied and beautiful. This is silky and fresh, wonderfully balanced and precise. This is great wine. Refined.
The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is a big, super-ripe wine bursting with fruit. This deep, concentrated Brunello is incredibly fresh and vibrant. Although the sweet tannins make the wine very accessible at this stage, readers in search of a more complex drinking experience will want to give this Brunello a few years in bottle. The 2004 Brunello from Castelgiocondo is a lovely effort from the Frescobaldi family and one of the finest vintages to be produced at the property. (AG)
