Score 91/100 · Drink 2005-2011, Pierre Rovani, Feb 2001

With coaxing, the aromatically muted, tightly wound 1999 Batard-Montrachet reveals a broad, concentrated, and deep personality. It is fresh, zesty, and tangy. Flavors of crisp pears and apples come to the fore with considerable air. Projected maturity: 2005-2011+. Importer: Chateau & Estate Wine Co., New York, NY; tel (212) 572-7725.

Deeply pitched but somewhat reticent aromas of pineapple and smoky oak. Fat, full and more powerful than the Chevalier; impressively chewy for the vintage. Seems a bit more alcoholic than the Chevalier but has enough supporting richness. Full of gas today and thus difficult to assess.
