Bursting with aromas of cherries, rose petals, ripe berries and orange rind, the 2018 Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru (négoce) is medium to full-bodied, lively and supple, its ample core of succulent fruit concealing melting tannins. Elegant and exuberant, this will drink well young. Lignier explains that the Mercier family's parcel of Griotte-Chambertin is leased to both Ponsot and Leclerc in metayage, some of which the Merciers take in grapes and sell to Laurent Lignier.

The 2018 Griottes-Chambertin Grand Cru is the fifth vintage from purchased fruit under the Lignier label. It has a rather closed, sultry bouquet that does not quite shift into fifth gear. The medium-bodied palate offers supple tannins, a svelte texture and candied red fruit mixed with blood orange and marmalade. It finishes with the style I would like to see develop on the nose.
