The 2005 Le Petit Cheval shows the aromatic intensity but also the power of the Grand Vin, all in miniature of course. Far from an easygoing second wine, Le Petit Cheval packs quite a punch. Mocha, tobacco, cedar, dried flowers and red berry fruit all open with a bit of coaxing. I would give this a good bit of air, as it is not especially forthcoming.

Tasted blind. Blackish ruby. Quite a bit of interest on the nose already. Then a bit spindly with a lack of real fruity core on the mid palate. Some sourness. Could be enjoyed already but there are lots of tannins underneath. (JR)

Exceptionally dark purple with a ruby rim. Very dense, sweet, rich nose – so 'modern' in idiom it could almost be California! Very flattering, sweet and round but all in balance. Bravo! (JR)
