Laurent’s 2005 Châteauneuf du Pape continues to show brilliantly. Made from the standard estate blend of 85% Grenache and then 5% each of Syrah, Mourvèdre and Vaccarese, aged all in concrete tank, it offers up a thrilling bouquet of kirsch and darker berry-styled fruits, flowers, licorice and pepper. Gorgeous on all accounts, with full-bodied richness, beautiful purity and laser focus and precision on the palate, drink this rock-star Châteauneuf anytime over the coming 10-15 years.

Looks quite mature. Pretty volatile! Too much so for me. Gloopy – without real definition. Stewed plums. Then pretty dry on the end. (JR)

The nose on the 2005 Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape is very bright and crisp with raspberry and kirsch fruit mixed with serious mineral, hot stone and licorice notes. The palate is medium bodied and structured, coming across as slightly unfriendly at the moment. Due to the structure and sappy profile to the fruit, I do think this will be great one day but I'd recommend cellaring for some time.
