Prager's 2014 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Achleiten opens with a clear and elegant, pretty deep bouquet exhibiting white and green fruits along with white champignon flavors. Dense and piquant on the palate, this is a full-bodied and fresh, pretty austere GV with just ripe fruit aromas (green apples) and lots of lime flavors in the finish. Firmly structured and with tension, but really demanding at this early stage. This is a rather lean classic that should improve over the next several years.

Site-typical floral perfume rather surprisingly tends toward heady honeysuckle and freesia, behind which emerge ripe melons, apple and snap pea. Satiny and glossy in feel as well as delightfully buoyant, this soothing and stimulating bottling harbors a clam-juice-like mineral and animal savor that certainly induces salivation. Both floral and fruity components convey ripeness, especially in the context of the 2014 growing season, yet there is plenty of the animation and refreshment that are among this vintage’s most attractive aspects. A piquantly cyanic hint of apple pips is stimulatingly integrated into the long, juicy, mouthwatering finish.
