The 1999 Vosne-Romanée Cros Parantoux 1er Cru has a forward nose with a touch of wet clay/potter's wheel infusing the upfront red berry fruit, hints of Christmas cake and crushed stone. This is holding something back for the future. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, more weight than the '01, fresh and sapid with a touch of black pepper and thyme towards the finish that fans out with confidence. Maybe just reaching its peak, yet with plenty in the tank. Tasted at the Méo-Camuzet dinner at Arbor in Hong Kong.

The medium to dark ruby-colored 1999 Vosne-Romanee Cros Parentoux has a gorgeous nose of intensely sweet cherries. Medium to full-bodied, it reveals a wonderful breadth of lush red and black cherry fruit in its exuberantly spicy personality. Toasted oak and copious quantities of marvelously ripe tannin characterize its impressively long finish. Projected maturity: 2004-2012. Importer: Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant, Berkeley, CA; tel. Ripe, explosive, spicy and sexy with wonderfully perfumed black fruit aromas followed by intense, powerful and sappy flavors blessed with a solidly tannic spine and excellent length. Perhaps it's just the stage that it's in but this seems fairly awkward today and well short of the potential that I saw in barrel. This is a wine that I would like to revisit in 5 years or so. It also struck me as though it was on the verge of shutting down for a while so perhaps it's simply a stage because it was monumental from cask. Allen Meadows, Burghound Jan01,2004
