The 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Romanée confirms its superb showing from barrel, mingling scents of green apple, melon and citrus with hints of pastry cream and wet stones. Medium to full-bodied, deep and satiny, it's more introverted and structured than the Caillerets, underpinned by a racy spine of acidity. The finish is long and penetrating.

Bright medium yellow. Tangy lemon and orange peel aromas as well as a malic suggestion of apple on the nose (this wine had a relatively late malolactic fermentation and had been sulfited two months before my visit). A savory wine with modest sweetness to its flavors of lemon, orange and crushed stone. A bit disjointed today and in need of time to absorb its acidity--and to knit. But finishes saline and long, with a repeating element of crushed stone. Serious juice.
