Niepoort's dense ruby-colored 2000 Broadbent offers an enticing perfume of cocoa, red and blackberries, and hints of leather as well as licorice. Spicy, nearly peppery, with medium to full body, abundant complexity, an evolved personality, and a moderately long finish, this stylish, elegant effort displays considerable personality. It will not make "old bones," but will drink well for 15-20 years. Importer: Martine's Wines, Novato, CA; tel. (415) 883-0400

This wine (tasted in late June rather than blind with the ports below) is a selection of Michael Broadbent and his son Bartholomew, the San Francisco wine importer, from wines made by Niepoort. Indeed it does taste like an as-yet-rather-unlikely mix of Niepoort's wild and rumbustious style encased in Broadbent's more rigorously traditional pinstripes. This one will need time to show its mettle. (JR)

(bottled by Niepoort) Moderately saturated bright ruby. Discreet aromas of black fruits, graphite, minerals, menthol, licorice and herbs. Juicy and moderately sweet, with firm acidity giving it good thrust. A rather sappy, Dow-style port: not particularly dense or fleshy but has punch and backbone. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins.
