The 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape from Mas de Boislauzon showed nicely and offered a full-bodied, ripe, mouth-filling profile that’s a joy to drink. Made from 60% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre and 15% Syrah that spent 18 months in foudre, it reveals lots of smoked beef (my notes say “slim jim!”), chocolaty dark fruits, licorice and spice-box aromas and flavors. It’s fully mature, but I suspect will hold nicely going forward as it has a fabulous core of fruit.

Deep red. Sexy, highly aromatic nose of cherry, raspberry, minerals, coffee, pepper and leather; quintessential rustic, traditional grenache. Rich, supple and gamey, with a liqueur-like ripeness. The ripely tannic, lingering finish features torrefaction notes of musky dark chocolate and roast coffee.
