Score 98/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous

(the first time these vines produced an SGN; 9% alcohol with 280 grams per liter of residual sugar; aged in two new barriques Extraordinarily pure, deep aromas of exotic fruits, marzipan, caramel, vanilla, clove and nutmeg, lifted by a suggestion of mint. A kaleidoscope of powerfully spicy flavors on the palate, with a superripe quality but, almost miraculously, no suggestion of cooked fruit or heaviness. The wine's oak component frames and firms the fruit while contributing its own subtle spicy character. Thick but fresh; a classic SGN from botrytis that Humbrecht describes as drier than in his other vineyards in 2001. Explosive, exhilarating finish.
