The 1989 Malvazia Reserva is quite expressive, wafting from the glass with aromas of figs, spices, dried citrus rind and coffee. Full-bodied, satiny and enveloping, it's elegantly textural, with fine depth at the core, nicely integrated sweetness and tangy balancing acids. This is quite a rich, generous and youthful Malvasia that would be versatile with sweet desserts.

Smells more savoury than the Boal 1984 even though it is sweeter. Nutty, bitter-caramel aroma, earthy. The most harmonious of all the D'Oliveiras wines tasted in this group. As powerful as the others but less strident. Gorgeous dried-apricot fruit intensity. (JH)
