Deep crimson with some evolution. Well-mannered, evolved bouquet – though not terribly Northern Rhône. Supple red wine with quite a bit of acidity and tannin. Quite solid but I think the grainy tannins may always be a bit prominent. (JR)

With its dark purple color and spicy new oak, blackberry, and cassis-scented nose, this impressively concentrated, expansive, full-bodied 1998 Cornas Domaine de Rochepertuis should be on the buying lists of fanciers of this rugged appellation. Approximately one-third new oak casks is utilized in the wine's upbringing, which is evident in the toasty nose and flavors. The exceptional mineral-laden blackberry fruit that makes Cornas so impressive is clearly present in this well-made wine. Anticipated maturity: 2001-2015. No known American importer.
