The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet Clos de la Garenne 1er Cru comes from 90-year-old vines. It has to shake off a touch of reduction at first, gradually opening to reveal scents of green apple, pear, orange zest and just a hint of white chocolate. The palate is well balanced with fine salinity on the entry. I admire the energy given off by this nascent Puligny. Very harmonious toward the finish, with superb salinity on the aftertaste. The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Garenne (Duc de Magenta) offers up aromas of minty pears, spices and smoky oak, followed by a medium to full-bodied, elegantly satiny palate with good underlying acidity and a long, pure finish.
Cask sample. Floral, tight nose suggests potential longevity. Leaner than most, with herbal notes. Quite refined, lots to chew on. (JR)
