The 2016 Beaumont has a lively bouquet, concentrated and a little savoury in style. Open-knit, with touches of brown spice, this gains vitality in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with smooth tannins and fine acidity, though it just dips before the finish line, prompting me to dock a point. Tasted blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting.

50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 47% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot. 30–35% new oak for 12 months. Mid crimson. Pale rim. Very ‘pleasant’ and well balanced with light blackcurrant fruit but fairly simple still and light-bodied with all of its charm concentrated into a very long finish. Not that much tannin. Fair price. This solid estate has produced a classic 2016 Château Beaumont with juicy cherry fruits, leafy herbs, and saddle leather notes in its balanced, medium-bodied, straight-up delicious profile. It’s ideal for drinking over the coming 5-7 years.
