Score 90/100 · Drink 2016-2024, Robert Parker, Dec 2014

A dark, brooding style of Pinot Noir, the 2012 Pinot Noir Akiko Cuvée exhibits a healthy, dark, saturated ruby hue, a slightly tighter structure than the other wines (with the exception of the Gloria), and sweet pomegranate, red and black cherry and forest floor notes. The best days of this cuvée are 1-2 years ahead of it. Drink 2016-2024.

(made with 40% new oak): Bright ruby. Energetic aromas of fresh red berries, potpourri and smoky minerals, with an Asian spice nuance building with air. Silky and sweet on the palate, offering concentrated, lively raspberry and floral pastille flavors that gain flesh and power with air. Dark berry qualities appear on the finish, which lingers with outstanding tenacity and gentle but gripping tannins. (JR)

The 2012 Pinot Noir Akiko's Cuvee is a selection of the best barrels in the cellar. Here the flavors are dark, rich and intense, but the tannins are also overpowering. Frankly, it's hard to get a sense of the direction the 2012 is taking, but today it offers less appeal than the straight Sonoma Coast bottling.
